Tank and Coil Cylinder – Comparison of Devices

18/06/2026

Autor: Jakub Sts

Although the terms tank and coil cylinder are often used interchangeably, they describe different devices. The differences affect efficiency, comfort and the possibilities of integrating heat sources.

What are the devices used for?

A coil cylinder and a buffer or accumulation tank both store thermal energy delivered by a heat source such as a boiler or fireplace with a water jacket. They can also cooperate with a heat pump or solar collectors.

The purpose is to reduce unnecessary work of the heat source and provide access to domestic hot water. However, in many cases a traditional cylinder has limited performance and does not fully meet household needs.

Advantages of a buffer tank

A buffer tank can combine several functions and cooperate with multiple sources. It stores heat, stabilizes the installation and supports flow-through domestic hot water preparation. This improves efficiency and comfort.

For users who expect reliable operation and flexibility, the buffer tank is often a more universal solution than a standard domestic hot water cylinder.
