Proper Fuel Storage – How to Prepare Coal and Wood

Home owners often start thinking about fuel storage long before the heating season begins. Buying wood or coal in advance and preparing it properly can reduce costs and improve combustion quality.

Why improper storage is a problem

Fresh wood contains a lot of moisture and needs time to dry. Wet wood is difficult to light, burns at a lower temperature, produces more smoke and leaves more deposits in the chimney. This reduces efficiency and increases the risk of chimney contamination.

Coal should also be protected against excessive moisture. Although it is less sensitive than wood, wet fuel is harder to use and may reduce the efficiency of the boiler.

How to store wood and coal

Wood should be stored in a dry, airy place, protected from rain but not closed tightly. Good ventilation is essential. Coal should be kept under a roof or in a dry storage room, away from standing water.

Properly prepared fuel burns cleaner, gives more heat and supports safer operation of the heating system. It also reduces the amount of work needed during the heating season.
