The stored energy may be needed after a few hours, several days or even after a longer period. This is especially important in systems based on renewable energy, where production and demand do not always occur at the same time.

TES systems absorb energy in the form of heat, store it in a suitable medium and release it when the building, installation or industrial process needs it. Thanks to this, energy produced at a convenient moment is not wasted.

Types of thermal energy storage

Several storage technologies are used in practice. Sensible heat storage uses materials that store energy by changing temperature without changing their state. Water, sand, gravel and molten salts are typical examples. This method is used in heating and cooling installations as well as in solar power systems.

Latent heat storage uses phase-change materials, known as PCM. These materials absorb or release large amounts of energy when they change state, for example from solid to liquid. They are useful where high storage capacity is required in a relatively small volume.

Thermochemical storage stores energy in chemical bonds. It can offer high energy density and long storage time, but requires more advanced technology and careful system design.

Heat and cold storage in buildings

In buildings, thermal storage helps stabilize heating, cooling and domestic hot water preparation. A buffer tank can collect heat from a boiler, heat pump, solar collectors or other sources and release it when demand increases. In cooling systems, the same idea can be used to store cold and reduce peak load.

This is useful not only for comfort, but also for economy. Energy can be produced when it is cheaper or when renewable sources are available, and then used later without overloading the installation.

Why storage matters

Energy storage supports the development of renewable energy and helps buildings become more independent. It reduces losses, improves the work of heat sources and makes installations more predictable.

For users, the practical effect is simple: more stable temperatures, better use of produced energy and lower operating costs. Properly selected storage is therefore one of the key elements of modern heating and cooling systems.

What is thermal energy storage?
